The human body has trillions of cells. While we generally think of vital organs such as the heart, stomach and kidneys working towards vital functions of the body, every function of the body actually originates in the cells. Cells have several different abilities and functions, and are of various kinds such as nerve cells, white blood cells, liver cells, muscle cells, etc. All cellular functions hugely depend upon cellular metabolism and the production of energy in the mitochondria.
What is Mitochondria
Each cell is surrounded by its cell membrane and contains a variety organelles. One of these organelles is called the mitochondria. It produces the energy required for cellular metabolism, transport, production of hormones and antibodies, communication with other cells and cellular reproduction.
Mitochondrial dysfunction occurs when cellular damage has occurred due to disease conditions such as cancer, Alzheimer’s disease, type-1 diabetes, multiple sclerosis, etc. It causes decreased oxidative capacity and increased oxidative damage, and contributes substantially to biological aging. The symptoms include fatigue and increase in pain as well as faster progression or flare-ups of existing health problems.
On the cellular level, reduction in mitochondrial dysfunction occurs as a result of the following changes:
(1) a loss of maintenance of the electrical and chemical transmembrane potential of the inner mitochondrial membrane,
(2) alterations in the function of the electron transport chain, or
(3) a reduction in the transport of critical metabolites into mitochondria.
In turn, these changes result in a reduction in production of ATP.
Cells with low energy will keep reducing, the end game being frailty and pain. One can therefore not expect after a point that even nutrition and diet will save you as the cells have lost the ability to absorb nutrients.
